Mbuyelo Teddy Hobyane was delighted to be awarded with Cum Laude and the prestigious Dean’s Merit Award for her Diploma in Somatology at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Celebratory Autumn Graduation ceremony.

It was held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Durban International Convention Centre, on Wednesday, 20 July 2022.

The 22-year-old from Malamulele, Limpopo, said her academic journey at DUT commenced in 2019 for her course.

“It was quite a major step to take as I had to relocate to a different province, and barely knew the place nor people and being away from my family, having to learn a new language was quite challenging. However, I met welcoming and accommodative people within the DUT community, so I was not alone as I had contemplated,” said Hobyane.

This superb achievement also took her by surprise and is a huge turning point for Hobyane as she never thought she could achieve such outstanding results.

“It made me realise that anything is possible and achievable if only one puts in the work and dedication into everything they do,” she said.

Even though her parents were a bit hesitant with the idea of her having to study in another province but they were extremely delighted and proud to learn of her brilliant accomplishments. It was an honour to make her parents proud and take home such impressive results.

She confessed that studying Somatology was indeed her choice of study as she is passionate about improving one’s quality of life, well-being and self-image.

During the duration of her study she did struggle with doing her academic work and time management, fortunately she was able to overcome these challenges by diarising every task on her calendar, and also approaching the lecturers when she was battling academically.

She hopes to continue in the Somatology field through research to help elevate the profession and to give it recognition as an occupation to be reckoned with.

She is currently pursuing her Advanced Diploma in Somatology at DUT.

“I am also hoping to get a scholarship to study abroad so that I can work with dermatologists and implement advanced treatments that are performed abroad, and practice what I have learnt in South Africa,” said the ambitious Hobyane.

Her advice to first-year-student, is make the best out of what one has.

“Passion is very important, love what you do and be goal-driven, attend your lectures and listen to the instructions and you will never go wrong, she concluded.
