ASPIRING RESEARCHER FLIES THE DUT FLAG HIGH IN THAILAND

In December 2024, Bongakonke Mthembu, a Master in Industrial Engineering student at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), embarked on an unforgettable academic journey to Thailand.

Mthembu who hails from Melmoth, KwaZulu-Natal was selected to present his research at the International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management (IEEM). He proudly represented both himself and DUT on an international platform.

His story began in 2019 when he enrolled at DUT to study Industrial Engineering. He earned his undergraduate degree in 2022 and immediately pursued his Honours, which he completed in 2023. That same year, he embarked on a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering, focusing on using Define Measure Analyse Improve Control (DMAIC) techniques to improve supply chain efficiency. His dedication to his studies and his passion for research paved the way for a life-changing opportunity.

In his second year of Master’s studies, under the guidance of his supervisor, Dr Menzi Mncwango, Mthembu developed two research papers based on his thesis. Despite being new to academic publishing, both papers were accepted for presentation at the IEEM conference in Thailand. The first paper delved into identifying the root causes of waste in sugar refining operations, while the second paper proposed strategies to improve supply chain efficiency and reduce material waste.

When Mthembu received the news that his papers had been accepted, he was overwhelmed with joy and disbelief.

“It was my first time writing research papers, and being selected for an international conference was a dream come true,” he said.

His trip to Thailand was made possible through support from DUT and Tongaat Hulett. He spent 10 days immersed in the world of advanced research, engaging with academics and professionals from across the globe. Mthembu was deeply inspired by the depth of knowledge shared at the conference and the opportunities for collaboration.

Reflecting on his time in Thailand, Mthembu was struck by the country’s safety and inclusivity.
“It was eye-opening to see how secure and welcoming the environment was. The experience allowed me to focus entirely on the conference and learn from the best,” he shared.

Behind his success is a strong support system. Mthembu credited his parents, Mr TH Mthembu and Mrs HN Mthembu, for their unwavering belief in his potential. He also expressed gratitude to Nokwazi Xulu, who supported him financially during his Honours year, and Dr Mncwango, whom he described as more than just a supervisor but a constant source of encouragement.

Mthembu’s journey from Melmoth to Thailand was not just a personal triumph but also a proud moment for DUT. Representing the university on an international stage, he showcased the institution’s commitment to excellence in research and innovation.

“I am grateful to DUT for the opportunity to grow academically and professionally. Their support has been instrumental in shaping my future,” he said.

To students aspiring to follow in his footsteps, Mthembu offers words of wisdom: “Stay committed to your studies and seek mentorship early. Industrial Engineering requires critical thinking, so embrace practical projects and lean methodologies to build a strong foundation.”

Mthembu’s story is a powerful reminder of what is possible with determination and the right support. His journey from a small town in KwaZulu-Natal to an international stage in Thailand is an inspiration to students everywhere, proving that with hard work, dreams truly can take flight.
