BABALWA KHUMALO GRADUATES CUM LAUDE WITH 22 DISTINCTIONS DESPITE FINANCIAL CHALLENGES

A quiet yet determined young woman from Estcourt is proving that resilience and consistency can overcome any obstacle. 22-year-old Babalwa Khumalo celebrated graduating Cum Laude from the Durban University of Technology on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, after an inspiring academic journey marked by perseverance, sacrifice, and remarkable academic excellence.

Babalwa graduated with a Diploma in Management Sciences specialising in Operations Management, completing her qualification with an impressive 22 distinctions out of 26 modules. Her success came after years of hard work, discipline, and determination to rise above financial and personal challenges.

Babalwa described herself as naturally introverted and shy, she said she has always believed that anything is possible if one remains focused and committed to their goals.

Her journey at DUT began in 2023 when she entered a completely new environment that demanded independence, responsibility, and resilience. Like many students, she faced financial pressure while relying on NSFAS support, forcing her to carefully manage limited resources while maintaining her academic performance.

“There were moments where I had to make sacrifices and remain disciplined with basic needs in order to stay focused academically,” she shared.

Despite these challenges, Babalwa refused to let her circumstances limit her potential. In her first year, she achieved eight distinctions out of ten modules, giving her the confidence to push herself even further academically.

“In my second year, I made a personal decision to aim for distinctions in all my major modules, and I successfully achieved that goal,” she said.

Her commitment to excellence earned her several prestigious academic recognitions throughout her studies. In March 2025, she received the Top Academic Achiever Award for her exceptional 2024 academic performance. Later that year, she was nominated by the Department of Operations and Quality Management for the Dean of Students Prestigious Award, where she was recognised among the university’s top 16 nominees.

Earlier this year, in April 2026, she was awarded First Place Top Academic Achiever for her third year in Operations Management, along with another award for outstanding performance in one of her major modules.

For Babalwa, graduating Cum Laude represents far more than academic success.

“Graduating Cum Laude is one of the most meaningful achievements of my life. It represents resilience, sacrifice, and perseverance. There were many moments of pressure and uncertainty, but I stayed focused on my goals,” she said.

Although Operations Management was not initially her first choice of study, she soon developed a passion for the field through her fascination with manufacturing systems and production processes.

“I wanted to understand how raw materials are transformed into final products through efficient processes, and that curiosity made me grow interest in this field,” she explained.

Now working as a Production Trainee at Hesto Harnesses, Babalwa is gaining valuable industry experience while preparing for the next chapter of her academic journey. She plans to pursue an Advanced Diploma in Operations Management next year and hopes to grow into a strong leader within the operations and manufacturing industry.

Her achievement also carries deep meaning for her family. Although she is not the first graduate in her family, she is the first person to attend university and complete a university qualification.

“My family was extremely proud and emotional when they heard the news. This achievement represents hope, progress, and possibility for my family,” she said.

Reflecting on her journey, Babalwa hopes her story will inspire students from small towns and challenging financial backgrounds to believe in their potential and remain committed to their dreams.

“My advice to first-year students is to stay focused on their purpose and not allow circumstances or distractions to define their journey. I was once an average student in high school, but at university I became one of the top academic achievers in my programme. That experience taught me that your past does not define your future,” she advised.
