BANTU MZILENI MAKES WAVES IN SHIPPING INDUSTRY

Bantubonke Mzileni, a determined graduate from Durban Central, has earned a notable achievement by completing his Advanced Diploma in Shipping and Logistics with Cum Laude, showcasing his academic growth and resilience. The 25-year old walked the stage at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) graduation ceremony, held at the Olive Convention Centre on Monday, 19 May 2025.

His passion for the maritime industry drove him to pursue his Advanced Diploma in Shipping. He was drawn to the industry’s complexity and purpose, and he saw it as a perfect match for his interests and long-term goals. Throughout his academic career, he has strived to uphold the values of honesty, discipline, and accountability, which have grounded him in both his studies and professional life.

His journey was not without any challenges, as he struggled managing academic pressure, financial constraints, and personal responsibilities.

“One of the biggest challenges I faced was managing the pressure of academic expectations while also dealing with financial constraints and personal responsibilities. Balancing it all required strong time management and mental resilience,” said Mzileni.

Mzileni aims to grow within the maritime industry, particularly in international trade and shipping logistics. He hopes to mentor young professionals and contribute to policy or innovation in the sector.

Currently, he is working at Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) as an Exports Client Services representative, where he applies his knowledge and skills in a real-world setting. Mzileni plans to further his studies with a Postgraduate Diploma in International Shipping to deepen his knowledge and broaden his career prospects.

Mzileni advises first-year students to stay curious, be disciplined, and ask questions. He emphasises the importance of a strong foundation in the shipping industry, which is vast and ever-changing.

Mzileni extends his sincere gratitude to DUT for the opportunity to grow academically and personally, thanking his lecturers for their impactful guidance and mentorship in shaping his professional development.
