BASDEO ENCOURAGES DUT STAFF AND STUDENTS TO COMPLETE THE AI DIGITAL SKILLING INITIATIVE

In partnership with Microsoft, the Department of Information Technology at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) has launched a digital skilling initiative that will train 33,000 individuals in Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills. Supported by a grant from Microsoft, the initiative forms part of their global commitment to expanding access to digital and AI education.

The curriculum comprises six comprehensive courses: AI Fundamentals, Generative AI, Search Technology, Responsible AI, Microsoft Copilot, and AI and Accessibility. These modules cover various topics, from AI and machine learning basics to ethical considerations, productivity tools, and inclusive technologies. The learning journey is designed to equip users with theoretical knowledge and practical applications of AI in real-world scenarios.

Taking up the digital challenge at DUT was Praksha Basdeo, (38) who assist with the audits of registration forms and the verification of matric results under the Department of Student Admissions unit.

Basdeo who had completed her Postgraduate Diploma in Management Sciences in Business Administration in 2024 at DUT, believes enhancing her AI skills is crucial as it enhances her practical, digital skills in her filed of work.

Her thoughts on completing the innovative Microsoft AI skills navigator course which she has indicated was an excellent course, easy to understand, and would benefit staff in the long run.

“The videos was short and easy to understand, as working people we do not have a lot of time to watch videos for hours at a time, this was made to simplify things,” she said.

For Basdeo, it is crucial to embark in such courses on AI as the world is leading towards an AI direction, so it is important for one to equip one’s self and have accurate knowledge about it.

In terms of how the AI course enhances what she does at DUT, she explained that the digital course showed simplifying ways to do things, how to attain knowledge, especially when working at Student Admissions which is one of the busiest units in DUT, and where time is of the essence.

Going forward, Basdeo encourages staff and students to complete this digital skilling initiative.

Mr Ebrahim Asmal, Head of the Department of Information Technology at DUT indicated that the platform they have developed delivers world-class content and reflects DUT’s commitment to building impactful digital solutions that support inclusive education.
