The Olive Convention Centre was filled with celebration and pride on Friday, 23 May 2025, as graduates from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) marked the successful completion of their academic journey. Among them was 22-year-old Tashmira Sadapal from Merebank, Durban, who graduated Cum Laude for her Advanced Diploma in Management Sciences in Human Resources.
Sadapal’s academic journey at DUT has been a deeply rewarding experience marked by both challenges and growth. “Starting out was a little intimidating, but I quickly adapted to the university environment. The curriculum was rigorous but incredibly insightful. It pushed me to think critically and continuously improve, while the support of passionate lecturers made learning both enjoyable and impactful,” she explained.
Adapting to online learning in her first year of study posed significant challenges, as she had to balance academic responsibilities with personal commitments. Despite these hurdles, Sadapal persevered, demonstrating resilience and discipline. “There were moments of feeling overwhelmed, but the support from my family and lecturers kept me grounded,” she said.
Graduating Cum Laude for the second time is a moment of immense pride for Sadapal. “It is a reflection of my dedication, sacrifices, and commitment over the years. Achieving this again just proves that hard work and perseverance truly pays off,” she shared. Her family’s reaction was one of joy and pride, with their continued encouragement serving as a driving force behind her success.
Sadapal has always been drawn to Human Resources, a field she describes as the perfect blend of strategic thinking and people-centred problem-solving. “I have always loved working with people and understanding how organisations function. Human Resources allows me to positively impact workplace culture and support employee growth two things I’m deeply passionate about,” she said.
She strongly aligns with DUT’s values of integrity and accountability, and its principles of commitment and fairness. “These are essential for earning trust, building credibility, and creating lasting success in both your personal and professional life,” she affirmed.
While she does not have immediate plans for further studies, Sadapal remains open to continuing her academic journey in the future. For now, her focus is on building a successful career in Human Resources. “I want to grow into a well-rounded professional, gain practical experience, and eventually step into a leadership role where I can influence workplace culture and strategy. Making a real difference in people’s careers is what drives me,” she added.
To first-year students considering a similar path, Sadapal offers this advice: “Be curious, committed, and open to learning. Take your studies seriously what you learn now builds the foundation for your future. Engage in activities that strengthen your communication and teamwork skills, and don’t be afraid to seek guidance. Most importantly, believe in yourself and stay committed to making workplaces better for everyone.”
