BEING ORGANISED AND MAKING DEADLINES HER PRIORITY HELPED NDLOVU TO EXCEL IN HER STUDIES

Thembelihle Ndlovu (25) from Hopewell in Pietermaritzburg says being organised and making deadlines her priority is what guaranteed her the spot among the Durban University of Technology’s top achievers who will be graduating at the 2021 Virtual Graduation on Wednesday, 01 December 2021.

Ndlovu will be graduating Cum Laude for her Bachelor of Technology Degree Civil Engineering: Water Engineering. Ndlovu is shocked that she managed to excel in her studies despite facing numerous challenges.

“My journey has been really challenging at DUT. When I was doing my National Diploma in Civil Engineering I faced a number of challenges, sickness and financial difficulties, struggling with accommodation and fees. Lack of finances was one of the major challenges I faced, online learning was also tough due to poor internet and load-shedding. Life became better after I obtained a student loan. However, my journey at DUT had been good, I enjoyed studying at this university as I met alot of people who inspired me and contributed so much in my career,” said Ndlovu.

Speaking about her academic excellence, obtaining Cum Laude is one of her best achievements so far. She explained that this achievement has made her believe that anything is possible only if you work hard. After receiving the good news, Ndlovu stated that her family was so happy and are currently planning a graduation party for her to celebrate such an achievement.

She also spoke briefly about her work experience and current position.

“I have obtained knowledge doing my in-service training with Afrocon Construction at Imbali Unit 3 in Pietermaritzburg, upgrading and widening Mt Partridge Road. I am currently working at Mthebeleni consultants as a Site Technician in one of their projects. Civil engineering had always been my dream job; I was so happy when I was accepted to do my studies at DUT. I am enjoying the building environment and providing engineering solutions to the society,” noted Ndlovu.

She is planning to resume her Master’s degree studies next year, as she aims to be a professional registered Civil Engineering Technologist. Ndlovu wants to open her own Civil Engineering Consulting firm where she will educate people about Civil Engineering, especially young people and to change people’s lives through engineering.

Her advice to first year students is that anything is possible, through hard work and that they also need to stay focused and put an extra effort in their studies. She advised that students must be organised, make deadlines their priority, never plagiarise, find a note-taking system that works well for them and take good care of their health. These are the points that helped throughout her journey.
