Building Skills and Confidence Amongst Female Researchers

Efforts to build skills and confidence amongst female Master’s/Doctoral and Postdoctoral researchers was the aim of the Science Communication Research Capacity Building Workshop which was held at the DUT Ritson Campus recently.
Facilitated by DUT’s Lentsu Nchabeleng, the workshop had top researchers Dr Nishani Ramdhani, Senior Water Sustainability Specialist at Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Research Psychologist, Tamlyn Seunanden from the Health Systems Trust, speaking on issues of research, engagement and the impact and benefits it has.

Dr Ramdhani spoke about how important it was for women to make connections by sharing experiences and strengthening connections by having such workshops. Her presentation covered issues such as engaging presentation skills, looking at knowledge transfer tools, methods of knowledge and initiative of knowledge transfer, what is research and its its benefit to society.
”This workshop was about empowering women in terms of communication, science, teaching and planning. The overall aim is to create knowledge transfer and knowledge exchange and share with our fellow colleagues. It’s always good to share and empower women,” she said.

Guest speaker, Seunanden, also gave her perspective on how to structure communication and design a knowledge exchange process. She also gave her overview as to how women can transfer their knowledge by creating a structure in one’s research.

The workshop concluded with a networking session with the speakers and female Master’s/Doctoral and Postdoctoral researchers.
