BUSINESS AND LEADERSHIP SEMINAR ADDRESS INNOVATION

BUSINESS AND LEADERSHIP SEMINAR ADDRESS INNOVATION

Entrepreneur and author, Sibusiso “DJ Sbu” Leope, emphasized the need for innovation and visionary minds during a Business and Leadership seminar held at DUT City Campus last Friday, 24 August 2018.

Speaking in front of a crowded Arthur Smith Hall, DJ Sbu said he lives to honour his name, Sibusiso which translates to Blessing. He further encouraged the youth to go all out and pursuit their passion for innovation.

“You guys can innovate. Not everyone needs to start a fish and chips business. You need to think differently, it is 2018 and things have changed. You need to start companies that are going to change lives, companies that are going to put you in the history books,” he said.

“If you want to do well, you need to know what you want. It is called the law of attraction. What you plant, you think on it, you act on it and you become it. At some airports in Doha and London they sell MoFaya to me, not knowing that I am the actual owner of the product,” added DJ Sbu.

The seminar was also attended by the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics, Prof Oludayo Olugbara who touched base on student participation in University development, referring to it as the education for democracy.

“The best diversity for the University is to develop leaders who will eventually develop their community. Our mission is to develop leaders for the future information society. If there are important issues that need to be addressed, we must get students involved, no matter how old the issue is. We must have students in every task team, in that way we allow them to become better leaders,” said Prof Olugbara.

Dr Jeanette Wing, the Acting Head of the IT Department at DUT urged students to apply what they have learnt in new and creative ways. She further added that true leaders should develop other leaders, not followers.

“When you see something, is it a problem or a solution? If you are an entrepreneur, you do not want to develop something that has been developed before,” said Dr Wing.

Amongst those who attended the seminar, was actress Natasha Thahane who spoke about putting in the hard work to break generational curses.

During the seminar, DUT alumnus and CEO of Wisolve, Terry Mavundla, thanked DUT Entrepreneurial Centre and Student Desk for providing him with the guidance when he was still starting his company, Wisolve. Mavundla, who also owns a driving school agreed to financially support two DUT students in getting driver’s licenses.

The seminar which was organised by the DUT IT Department in Association with Wisolve Foundation and SRC 2017/2018, was hosted by Lungisani Mavundla of Ukhozi FM.
