Business Start-up Training

Business Start-up Training

The DUT Midlands Entrepreneurship Centre held a 6 weeks business start-up training, from 15 April -9 May 2019 at Indumiso Campus. In this impactful training, the DUT Midlands Entrepreneurship Centre partnered with the DUT Midlands Public Management Department.

Entrepreneurship is a key focus area in South Africa at present. This training is aimed at filling the knowledge gap on the practical skills and knowledge required to launch a business. The training is designed to mitigate risk failure and guide students in seeking opportunities to create new ventures. Moreover, students need to discover ways of evaluating business ideas, solving business problems and determine strategic growth opportunities.

This training was of great value for those who want to have their own business and for those who already have operating businesses. It covered a variety of entrepreneurial topics such as the: Introduction to entrepreneurial fundamentals; Creative business thinking, Feasibility study and a Business plan. This content gave the students an in-depth knowledge about the fundamentals of entrepreneurship.
On each topic covered, there were practical exercises that correlated with the theory. Practical excises assisted students in gaining a thorough understanding of each session covered. Practical exercises also aided facilitators in evaluating the understanding of each student.

Hlengiwe Mabizela, Public management Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Coordinator highlighted that the training is a response towards the institutional call which is to implement entrepreneurship within the university. “Unemployment rate is very high in South Africa, entrepreneurship seems to be the only solution for this issue. As a department, we have noticed that most of our students aspire to be entrepreneurs, having an Entrepreneurship Centre in the Midlands is therefore, a great opportunity that the students need to take leverage of, especially since they are still young and energetic” she added.

“I have always wanted to have my own business but I had no background information about a business. I didn’t know what to do and where to start. This training played a paramount role in terms of giving us the fundamentals of a business, now I know where to start. This training was not only about theoretical knowledge as we did a lot of practical activities” said Sinethemba Sijula; Public Management student.
Students are encouraged to take part in solving real problems that are facing the world through entrepreneurship.
