HEAD OF GROUP

The research group is headed by Professor K. Kanny. Prof. Kanny is a seasoned engineer and scientist with over ten years experience in management, leadership, and human resources development. Additionally he has over fifteen years research experience in manufacturing, robotics, and advanced engineering materials, as well as extensive experience in mechanical engineering product, process and system design including development, implementation and commissioning.Prof. Kanny’s professional interests include designing, processing, and testing of composite material systems, reinforced thermoset and thermoplastic structures, and nano-infused structures for aerospace, naval and automotive applications. Other areas of interest are failure analysis via computational and analytical modelling, and characterisation & morphological analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Additional interests include renewable energy solutions, demand side management (DSM) and water-jet machining.
Professor K. Kanny, PhD. (TU-USA); Pr. Tech. (Eng); MSc. (NU); GCC (factories) MSAIMechE

Prof. Kanny is registered as a Professional Technologist (Pr. Tech. ENG) with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). He also has professional membership with the South African Institute of Mechanical Engineers (SAIMechE), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronomics (AIAA). Prof. Kanny is a rated scientist with the National Research Foundation (NRF).
