Local Chinese communities were honoured for their active roles in developing the local economy and their contribution to the prosperity of South Africa. Praise was also given to the DUT Confucius Institute for its work in promoting educational and cultural collaboration between China and South Africa.

To add to the celebrations, an art troupe from the Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University (FAFU), specially designated by the Chinese Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters in Beijing, traveled from Fujian to Durban for this event. By sharing the stage with local South African Zulu artists and martial arts (Chinese Kungfu) practitioners, the Chinese young artists, together with their South African counterparts, displayed a fantastic visual feast of Chinese and South African art.

“As the first and one of the most important projects of the Confucius Institute at the Durban University of Technology, this Durban Traditional Chinese New Lunar Year of Rooster Gala brings good blessings for the people from China and from South Africa as well”, said Dr Eddie Chaobo Fu, Co-Dean at the DUT Confucius Institute. “By immersing in the happiness and joyfulness of the most auspicious Chinese Festival, the audience; regardless of the race, color, and ethnic background, expressed the same best wishes for a prosperous life, a safe and merry society, and a long-lasting friendship. This celebration, in all joyous means, has greatly familiarised the local communities with rich Chinese festive culture and promoted the cohesion and inclusion of different cultures and beliefs”, added Dr Fu.
