CHILIZA FROM UMTHWALUME OBTAINS CUM LAUDE FOR HER DIPLOMA IN SHIPPING AND LOGISTICS

CHILIZA FROM UMTHWALUME OBTAINS CUM LAUDE FOR HER DIPLOMA IN SHIPPING AND LOGISTICS

“The course, Shipping and Logistics is not without challenges but with the right motivation and hard work you can overcome them all,” said Thobeka Chiliza.

Chiliza’s wish was to study Radiography at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) but ended up opting for a Diploma in Shipping and Logistics. Hailing from uMthwalume in the South Coast, Chiliza aimed to excel in her studies from day one.

She obtained Cum Laude for her National Diploma in Shipping and Logistics and she graduated during the DUT Virtual Summer Graduation held on Wednesday, 01 December 2021.

Upon receiving the news that she was the best performing student in her class in 2018, she was afforded an opportunity to visit Shanghai, China where she grew her love for Mandarin.

“I enrolled for mandarin classes at the DUT Confucius Institute at the beginning of 2019. It was challenging to balance my course classes and mandarin classes to the point that I had to change some elective modules and take ones that would suit my timetable better and allow me to attend my mandarin classes. I was able to do well in this class, and obtain my HSK2 certificate that semester. Towards the end of the second semester that year, I was selected as the best performing student to go to Fuzhou, China in December 2019. This time I had my passport sorted so I didn’t have too many issues. I am now a level 4 mandarin student, I am yet to take my HSK test,” said Chiliza.

Chiliza said learning remotely has been hard for her, more especially because she lives in a rural area.

“I remember not having data to attend the online classes and when we did receive data, I still could not attend due to network issues, this affected my performance. Our lecturers were supportive and patient with us during this time, so it all worked out not too bad in the end,” she said.

She was, however, fortunate to find a company for her Work Integrated Learning (WIL) period since it is mandatory to do along with the Shipping and Logistics course. Chiliza added by saying that her journey at DUT was a memorable one.

“I intend to do the Advanced Diploma in Shipping and Logistics next year, 2022 and take it from DUT. I encourage everyone who wish to pursue the same career to work hard and it will pay off,” said Chiliza.
