The Department may require applicants to undergo an interview to establish aptitude and interest.
The number of learners accepted each year will depend on the growth policy of the Durban University of Technology and that of the Department.
Learners taking the sea-going option must, on registration, provide the Department with the result of a SAMSA (South African Maritime Safety Authority) eye test, and a medical fitness certificate from a SAMSA approved medical practitioner. The SAMSA office is situated in Suite 1401, Kingsfield Place, 30 Field Street, Durban and tel: 031 3071501. A SAMSA regional office may also be consulted. Failure in either of these assessments will mean that a sea-going career will not be possible.
