For the first time in Africa, the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) will host the prestigious 2026 DataScientia International Symposium from Wednesday, 22 July 2026 to Saturday, 25 July 2026. A key highlight of the opening ceremony will be the official launch of the DUT DataScientia Living Lab, marking a significant milestone in DUT’s commitment to advancing cutting-edge research, innovation, and international collaboration in data science and artificial intelligence.
The symposium will bring together leading academics, researchers, policymakers, industry experts, representatives of international organisations, and state-owned entities from Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and South America. The event will also welcome new collaborators from across Africa, creating an important platform for global knowledge exchange and research collaboration.
DUT first in Africa to host the Data Scientia International Symposium
Professor Oludayo Olugbara, the DataScientia local organising committee chair and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics at DUT said the 2026 DataScientia International Symposium marks a significant step in advancing the global dialogue on Sovereign Artificial Intelligence (AI), an approach to AI development that promotes cultural diversity, safeguards local knowledge, and supports data and model autonomy across regions and communities.
“As artificial intelligence continues to shape societies worldwide, the symposium aims to foster inclusive, ethical, and context-sensitive AI solutions that address the unique needs of diverse communities. Designed as a multi-day collaborative platform, the symposium will combine scientific exchange, policy dialogue, and strategic co-creation. Participants will engage in keynote presentations, panel discussions, collaborative workshops, and networking opportunities focused on shaping the future of responsible and culturally aware AI systems,” shared Prof Olugbara.
The symposium reinforces DUT’s commitment to international research partnerships, digital innovation, and the development of technologies that contribute to sustainable and inclusive societies. By hosting this landmark event, the University further strengthens its position as a leading institution driving research excellence and innovation in Africa.
