Durban University of Technology (DUT) Fine Art and Jewellery Design’s Head of Department, Dr Chris De Beer was recently in China where he was appointed Executive Member of the International Jewellery College Association- responsible for Africa.
The International Jewellery College Association was initiated by the Beijing Institute of Jewellery Technology. It is made up of various universities and higher education institutions from the USA, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, the UK (London and Birmingham), Japan, Israel, and China that offer Jewellery design as a qualification.
It focuses on sustainable development of the jewellery industry and jewellery education. It draws attention to the development of new sustainable materials for using as alternatives to non-renewable resources. Additionally, it encourages the development of sustainable business practices in the jewellery industry.
The association also provides a substantial amount of funding for travel and collaborative activities, such as exhibitions and symposia.
Explaining his new position, Dr De Beer said, “My role will be to encourage collaboration between jewellery design educational institutions in Africa, particularly Southern Africa in terms of the manifesto, and to be the link for international collaboration in this regard.”
Dr De Beer’s appointment means DUT’s Jewellery Design programme will gain broader exposure and more opportunities for collaboration with other institutions.
“This will lead to informed graduates that can engage on a wider platform. It will also highlight our own design and research practices with wider application throughout Africa, and beyond,” said Dr De Beer.
Dr De Beer who is an award winning jewellery designer and has been at the helm of DUT Jewellery Design programme for many years, said this is a great is a great opportunity for him to make a positive contribution to the jewellery design education environment.
Faculty of Arts and Design’s Executive Dean, Dr René Smith congratulated Dr De Beer saying, “This is a huge honour and we are proud of Dr De Beer who is not only representing South Africa but also Africa. It is wonderful to see staff being recognised internationally for their skills and expertise.”
