DEAN’S MERIT AWARDEE THAMSANQA MBOKAZI URGES FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS TO STAY COMMITTED

Thamsanqa Mbokazi, a 33-year-old from  Ladysmith, has achieved remarkable academic success at the Durban University of Technology (DUT). His academic achievement was celebrated during the Faculty of Management Sciences graduation session, held at the Olive Convention Centre on Wednesday, 21 May 2025. He completed his Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration specialising in Local Government Management with Cum Laude, earning himself a Dean’s Merit award.

His journey began in 2020, pursuing a Diploma in Public Administration specialising in Local Government Management, which he completed with  Cum Laude. He furthered his studies with an Advanced Diploma in Public Administration, again achieving Cum Laude with a Dean’s Merit award.

Mbokazi’s academic achievements are a testament to his dedication and perseverance. As a part-time WIL Administrator at DUT, he gained valuable experience in his field. His experiences at DUT were enriched by participation in projects like the Tongaat Disaster community engagement and the Global Learning Experience (GLE), a virtual exchange programme that broadened his perspectives.

“Beyond my academic successes, my time at DUT was filled with experiences that truly shaped who I am personally and professionally. I got to join the Global Learning Experience (GLE), a virtual exchange program where I teamed up with students from all over the world, opening my eyes to new perspectives. One of the standout moments was attending the Winter School in Russia. It was an incredible opportunity to dive into different cultures, learn new academic approaches, and connect with people globally. That experience really hit home for me, showing me the bigger picture of global challenges and inspiring me to think about how I can contribute to creative solutions as a young professional,” he said.

The DUT value that resonates with Thami is excellence, which he believes is a mindset that drives him to strive for continuous improvement. Despite facing challenges, including financial constraints, Thami remained committed to his studies. His family, particularly his mother, was overjoyed by his achievements, celebrating his success as a victory for the entire family.

Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Public Administration, specialising in Local Government Management at DUT and working as a WIL Administrator at SOE MANCOSA, Mbokazi is gaining valuable experience from both aspects.

His advice to first-year students is to stay committed, ask questions, and seek help when needed. He emphasises the importance of believing in oneself, even in the face of challenges.
