Dlamini praise DUT Writing Centre for his published book

Durban University of Technology’s Public Relations Management student, Samukelo Dlamini, has heap praises on DUT Writing Centre staff for helping him to write his first book “Like Nothing Else Exists.”

Dlamini, who is currently studying towards his B-Tech Degree in Public Relations Management, published his book in 2017 at the age of 21 and says it would have been impossible to do it all alone without the help from DUT Writing Centre.

“I was very lucky because when I went there [DUT Writing Centre] I met with very passionate individuals who were able to sharpen my creative writing skills. They also recommended some materials of similar writers and that sort of eased my path,” Dlamini said.

Like Nothing Else Exists is a collection of poems that explores and delves into the modern challenges and issues of South African people. Throughout the 84-page book, a unique South African story is told through rhythmic verses of poetry. Among other issues, the book covers topics such as, love, romance, social issues and everyday life challenges.

Prior to beginning his studies at DUT in 2015, Dlamini was a pupil at Sizisizwe Secondary School at Ixopo and says that is where he discovered his passion for creative writing.

“I developed an interest in writing when I was doing English in 2013. What interested me the most was writers such as Wally Serote, Keorapetse Kgositsile.  I would say that I have read a lot of stories from those kinds of writers who were exiled,” Dlamini added, cheerfully.

According to the Manager of the DUT Writing Centre at ML Sultan, Dr Nereshnee Govender, Samukelo’s achievement did not come as a surprise since he is a regular at the campus’s writing centre.

“Samukelo has experienced the benefit of active dialogic engagement in enhancing his writing,” said Dr Govender.

“Our aim at the Writing Centre is to provide a friendly environment where writers feel comfortable to discuss and develop their reading and writing. The Writing Centre is considered a place where students are allowed the time and respect necessary to develop, grow and feel confident in their roles as life-long learners,” added Dr Govender.

Dr Govender also encouraged other students with similar talent to see the writing centre as a place that does not only offer help in academic writing but also in creative work.

In terms of writing, Dlamini said there is still a lot to come from him and promises to publish another book within the next five years.

Like Nothing Else Exists is currently only sold at Adams Bookseller’s on Dr Pixley KaSeme Street, Durban for R185, however, the enthusiastic PR student says he is currently working on other plans to make the book accessible to other bookshops throughout the country.

The book is published by Sanqo Media, and was officially launched at the BAT Centre beginning of June 2018.
