Donation Makes Huge Impact

The Jewellery Design Department at DUT recently received jewellery making tools worth R30 000 from the Imfundiso Skills Development which will assist in making the teaching and learning process much easier and beneficial for both students and lectures in the Department.

Creating unique art pieces, beautiful designs and excellence is what the jewellery design department really prides itself with.

With annual jewellery design exhibitions coming up, Chris de Beer, Jewellery Design Department HoD, is ecstatic about the donation. He hopes that the donation will help students up their game this year to produce outstanding designs and jewellery.

“We are really grateful to have received such a generous donation that will help our students and the department. It’s very important that every student has their own tools when working as this minimises confusion and encourages students to work independently as we are now shaping and grooming them for the outside world of being able to stand on your own two feet. This donation will also be helping generations to come and is a wise investment towards the future of our students’ education and the growth of the economy,” said de Beer.

Second-year Jewellery Design student Precious Nhlumayo was also exited about the donation, saying the Department always goes an extra mile in putting its students’ needs first. “It (Jewellery Design Department ) also makes sure that we get quality over quantity. Last year (2015) when I could not afford to buy my own tools, the department assisted me in every way in ensuring that I had everything that was needed and was not left behind. I also cannot wait to see and use the new tools that have been donated to us,” said Nhlumayo.
