Area of Expertise: My teaching and research interests include urban studies, urban and economic development processes in South African cities; governance, relationships between the state and the private sector in cities; implications of climate change on urban governance and quality of life, place-making, and deepening our understanding of the implications of urban development interventions for the lived experiences of formal and informal communities.

Bio: I am a human geographer with research interests in cities, urban development, governance and quality of life. I have 22 years experience, mostly in higher education, research, and consulting within the fields of geography, economic development and town planning. My PhD research was focused on urban change in South African cities, with particular emphasis on the relationship between economic growth, post apartheid transformation and neoliberalism. I am currently collaborating with researchers at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the University of the Western Cape on an NRF-funded project on the nexus of waste, water and society in relation to climate change, governance and South African cities. I teach settlement history, urban theory and research methods.
