The Durban University of Technology (DUT) continues to make its mark on the global stage, with Dr Nomcebo Mthombeni, Interim Director: Research and Postgraduate Support, being appointed to the Early Career Board of ACS Sustainable Resource Management, a journal of the American Chemical Society (ACS), one of the world’s most trusted and cited scientific publisher.
Dr Mthombeni, who holds a Doctorate in Chemical Engineering, expressed deep gratitude and honour at the appointment, describing it as both a privilege and a responsibility to contribute to shaping the global discourse on sustainability, the circular economy, and resource innovation. “Representing DUT and South Africa on this platform allows me to highlight perspectives from Africa and the Global South in international scientific discussions that advance sustainability and inclusive development,” she said.
Her appointment is a significant milestone, not only a personal achievement but also a testament to Africa’s growing leadership in scientific research and innovation for sustainable development. It highlights the vital role that African scientists are playing in addressing global challenges through local innovation, where indigenous knowledge and modern science converge to create lasting impact.
Dr Mthombeni joins an elite team of global scholars from leading institutions such as Imperial College London, the California Institute of Technology, IIT Bombay, Kyoto University, Aalto University and the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology. Together, the Board aims to advance research that bridges technology, policy and society, through inclusive and transdisciplinary approaches.
Reflecting DUT’s ENVISION2030 strategy, Dr Mthombeni’s appointment reinforces the university’s reputation for academic excellence and thought leadership in sustainability science.
