Driven by a clear sense of purpose and vision, Dr Riona Indhur is committed to research that creates a lasting impact. Dr Indhur is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Institution for Water and Wastewater technology (IWWT) within the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the Durban University of Technology (DUT). Her dedication and contributions to research excellence were recently recognised when she was honoured at the DUT Institutional Awards 2025.
For Dr Indhur being honoured was an incredibly humbling experience. It reminded her that perseverance, faith, and purpose will always bear fruit, even when the journey feels uncertain. It represents countless late nights, challenges, and small victories that have shaped her growth as a person.
This recognition for her affirms the value of dedication and integrity in research. It serves as encouragement to continue striving for excellence and to contribute meaningfully to science that benefits both people and the environment.
“I see this award not as a destination, but as a milestone that inspires me to keep learning and building knowledge that can create lasting impact,” she added.
The greatest challenges she had faced was navigating the uncertainty that comes with scientific research and managing the demands of interdisciplinary work across chemistry. As the result the progress was often non-linear, requiring perseverance, adaptability, and continuous learning.
“I overcame these challenges through mentorship and a commitment to purpose-driven research. Each obstacle reinforced the importance of resilience and focus, shaping both my professional growth and my dedication to advancing sustainable environmental solutions,’’ she explained.
To fellow researchers Dr Indhur said excellence is achieved through consistency, humility, and perseverance. She believes that success in research is not defined by speed but by the willingness to keep learning, refining, and growing through every challenge.
“My advice is to remain curious, seek mentorship, and stay grounded in your purpose. Every experiment, whether it succeeds or fails, contributes to progress. Believe in your work, value collaboration, and trust that dedication will always yield meaningful outcomes,” she advised.
She expressed deep gratitude to the DUT for fostering an environment where innovation and academic excellence can thrive. She also extended sincere appreciation to her supervisors, Professor Sheena Kumari, who believed in her and gave her the opportunity to transition into a new research field.
Also, to Dr Arvind Kumar, whose mentorship has been truly transformative.
Dr Indhur emphasised that this recognition is not hers alone, but it reflects the collective effort of a dedicated research community striving to advance solutions that promote water quality, sustainability, and public health. She hopes this achievement inspires students and emerging researchers to pursue their goals with determination and to remember that every contribution, no matter how small, plays a role in creating positive change.
