Slindile Thenjiwe Mdletshe proudly graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Management Sciences, specialising in Marketing, from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) on Friday, 19 September 2025. The graduation ceremony took place at the Olive Convention Centre (OCC) in Durban

Dr Mdletshe’s academic journey at DUT began in 2013 when she transferred from the University of Zululand to pursue her B-Tech degree. She completed her undergraduate studies and went on to earn her Master’s degree and eventually her PhD from DUT. Reflecting on her time at the institution, she highlights the significant milestones she had achieved, showcasing her dedication to academic excellence.

Her title of thesis is titled, Exploring the employment opportunities through social networking platforms for black South African millennials at selected universities in KwaZulu-Natal.

Dr Mdletshe’s study explored how Black South African millennials can use social networking platforms, particularly LinkedIn, to access employment opportunities. The research involved a mixed-methods approach, including a survey of 609 students from three universities and 11 interviews with personnel from government and recruitment agencies.

The findings her research showed that LinkedIn provides a convenient and effective way for Black South African millennials to access job opportunities. The study offers insights for both job seekers and recruiters, contributing to addressing youth unemployment in South Africa.

She said that she resonated with the DUT’s living values and principles. She had come to realise that two essential qualities that can take one far in life are respect and commitment. She emphasised that discipline helps one stay focused, while commitment keeps one driven. She noted that together, these traits can enable individuals to achieve anything they set their minds to. Furthermore, she stressed that staying true to one’s goals, values, and principles is key to unlocking one’s full potential and reaching new heights.

“As someone who has walked in the shoes of young girls from similar backgrounds, I understand the struggles and challenges they face. Growing up in a tough environment, I never thought I’d make it this far. But I have learned that with determination and perseverance, anything is possible. My message to these young girls is simple: don’t give up on your dreams. The sky is not the limit, it’s just the beginning,” Dr Mdletshe shared.
