Eighteen years later, Sthembile Mavundla has finally achieved her dream of studying Operations Management. Her journey was not an easy one. While still in matric, she lost her father, leaving her family without financial support.
After passing matric in 2006, she attempted to further her studies, but her National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) application was unfortunately rejected. As the eldest sibling, Sthembile had no choice but to put her studies on hold and seek employment to help support her family.
Determined to build a better future, she later secured a contract position as an Operator at engineering company L&J. In 2023, nearly two decades after leaving school, she finally registered to pursue the dream she had carried for so many years.
Today, Sthembile (39), from Seaview, Durban, has not only fulfilled that dream but excelled beyond expectations. She graduated Cum Laude with a Diploma in Management Sciences in Operations Management during DUT’s Autumn Graduation Ceremony held at the Olive Convention Centre (OCC) on Tuesday, 26 May 2025.
“This moment is very emotional for me. I am very proud of myself and happy about what I have achieved. It was never easy at all. Indeed, hard work really pays off,” she said.
Sthembile credits her success to determination, discipline, and refusing to give up. She explained that these qualities were essential while balancing part-time studies with work, family responsibilities, and personal commitments.
She also drew inspiration from her sister, who is currently pursuing a master’s degree and consistently encouraged her to return to academics. Her journey serves as a powerful reminder that delays are not denials, and that perseverance can turn dreams into reality.
