For 21-year-old Shailen Govinder from Durban, graduating had always been a dream. That dream became a reality when he graduated Cum Laude from Durban University of Technology (DUT) after successfully completing his Diploma in Hospitality Management during the 2026 Autumn Graduation ceremony.
Reflecting on his academic journey, Govinder described his time at DUT as an incredible experience filled with memories, hard work, and dedication. He shared that maintaining balance throughout his studies was important, as he always prioritised his academics while managing other responsibilities.
Sharing the DUT living values that resonated most with him, he explained that respect, accountability, and honesty stood out as guiding values in his academic journey. He added that these values shaped the way he approached both his studies and his personal conduct, encouraging him to remain disciplined, responsible, and truthful in all he did.
One of the challenges he faced during his studies was overcoming a language barrier, as he was the only Indian student within his qualification. Despite this, he said the experience turned out positively, allowing him to build meaningful friendships and excel academically.
“The turnover was great, with more friends than I ever imagined, and being placed first in my qualification,” he shared.
Govinder said his family reacted with overwhelming pride and happiness when they learned about his achievement. He added that graduating had always been his dream, and achieving it made him even more motivated to further his studies in a business-related field to upgrade his qualification.
“Graduating Cum Laude was a very proud and emotional moment for me, as it reflected years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice throughout my studies. The achievement has motivated me to continue striving for excellence in my future career and personal growth,” he said.
Currently, Govinder is employed at The Edward Hotel, where he works as a Head Receptionist in the Front Office department. He believes that his qualification has prepared him well for the hospitality industry and contributed to his professional growth.
“I am super grateful for this opportunity. This achievement means a lot to me personally and academically. This recognition motivated me to continue striving for excellence in my career and future studies,” he expressed.
Offering advice to fellow students, he encouraged them to stay focused, work hard, and always give their best in everything they do. He also wished aspiring hospitality students well, adding that hospitality is not just a qualification, but a lifestyle.
