The Durban Campus reigned supreme at its third annual Vice-Chancellor’s Cup (VC Cup), hosted by the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Sport Administration unit on Saturday, 4 September 2025, at the Fred Crookes Sports Centre, Steve Biko Campus.
The tournament, which has fast become one of DUT’s most anticipated event, aims to promote unity, wellness, and holistic development among students and staff. Beyond competition, it is a celebration of sportsmanship, leadership, teamwork, and the vibrant DUT spirit that unites all campuses.
Welcoming the teams and spectators, Registrar Dr Maditsane Nkonoane encouraged participants to make the most of the day, to not only to compete but also to connect, enjoy, and create memorable experiences.
The VC Cup featured numerous lineups of sports activities, including aerobics, basketball, rugby, chess, football, karate, and netball. The day kicked off with an exciting opening match, where the Executive Management Committee (EMC) team defeated the Labour Union representatives 3-1.
Throughout the tournament, the Durban Campus students displayed exceptional skills, teamwork, and determination across all sporting codes. Their collective efforts paid off, as they secured the highest overall points and were crowned the 2025 Vice-Chancellor’s Cup Champions.
The DUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Thandwa Mthembu, honoured the occasion with his presence, cheering on the EMC team and applauding the dedication and unity showcased by staff and students.
For many students in sport, the tournament was also a valuable opportunity to prepare for the University Sport South Africa (USSA) games. Mluleki Mdunge, a Diploma in Business Administration student representing the Midlands Campus football team, expressed his appreciation for the timing of the event. “The VC Cup helps us sharpen our game and build confidence ahead of USSAs. It is also great to interact with staff in a relaxed, fun setting,” he said.
Msizi Dlamini from the Durban Campus Basketball team echoed his sentiment, highlighting how the games serve as both motivation and a measure of progress.
“These matches boost our morale and help us gauge our readiness for competitive tournaments,” he added.
The day concluded with a celebratory trophy and medals handover ceremony, led by Dean of Students Dr Clement Moreku, Registrar Dr. Maditsane Nkonoane, Interim Chief Financial Officer Mr Siboniso Shabalala, and Sport Administration Manager Mr Bongani Yengwa.
