The Durban University of Technology Advancement and Alumni Relations Unit recently launched its DUT RISE (Readiness & Industry Skills Enhancement) Programme, an initiative aimed at equipping graduates with essential skills for the evolving professional landscape. Hosted by the Advancement and Alumni Relations unit with the project led by Ms Ronelle Lyson, the launch event featured insightful presentations from industry experts.
The event commenced with a welcome address by Mrs Nishie Govender who is the Fundraising and Alumni Relations Manager, who emphasised the significance of the DUT RISE Programme in fostering a culture of continuous learning and adaptability among DUT graduates. Mrs Govender highlighted the university’s commitment to producing “adaptive graduates” aligned with its ENVISION2030 strategy, which focuses on innovation, entrepreneurship, and societal impact.
Mr Jeremy Beukes, representing the South African Graduate Employers Association (SAGEA), delivered a compelling talk on the expectations of employers in the current job market. Mr Beukes underscored the importance of soft skills, such as communication, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence, in enhancing employability. Mr Beukes also discussed the role of SAGEA in bridging the gap between academia and industry, facilitating smoother transitions for graduates into the workforce.
Mr Tshepo Kgapane, a representative from Blackbullion South Africa, introduced the financial education programme, Wafunda, funded by Sanlam. Mr Kgapane provided attendees with practical tools and resources to manage personal finances effectively, a crucial aspect often overlooked in traditional academic curricula. Mr Kgapane emphasised the significance of financial literacy in achieving long-term career success and personal well-being.
The DUT RISE Programme encompasses a series of workshops, webinars, and mentorship opportunities designed to
address the multifaceted challenges faced by graduates. It aims to empower participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the complexities of the modern workplace. By collaborating with organisations like SAGEA and Blackbullion, the DUT ensures that its graduates are well-prepared to meet the demands of a dynamic global economy.
