The Advancement and Alumni Relations Unit (AARU) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) is proud to announce the launch of a transformative new initiative the DUT RISE (Readiness & Industry Skills Enhancement) Programme which will officially be introduced at a special launch event on Thursday, 05 June 2025, from 13h30 to 14h30, at Mansfield Hall, Ritson Campus.
This flagship programme, developed and driven by the Advancement and Alumni Relations unit, is designed to prepare DUT students for the world of work by equipping them with essential industry skills, fostering alumni connections, and facilitating mentorship and networking opportunities. The initiative is a proactive step towards alleviating graduate unemployment and enhancing employability outcomes for DUT students.
“The DUT RISE Programme is a game-changer for DUT graduates. We are incredibly proud to be launching this initiative, which will not only ease the transition from university to the professional world but also strengthen the lifelong bond between our students and the institution,” said Mr Zwakele Ngubane, Director of the Advancement and Alumni Relations unit.
The DUT RISE Programme, envisioned as a Pre-Alumni Programme, is tailored specifically for students in their final year or those within a year of graduating. It aims to instil career readiness while fostering a sense of connection to the DUT alumni community even before students complete their studies.
“This is an exciting time for our unit. We see DUT RISE as more than just a programme, it’s a movement to empower, support and uplift our students as they embark on their post-graduation journeys. It’s about building a vibrant and engaged pre-alumni community that grows into a strong, supportive alumni network,” said Ms Ronelle Lyson, Alumni Relations Coordinator.

- Networking: Create opportunities for meaningful interaction with alumni and industry professionals.
- Lifelong Engagement: Encourage early alumni involvement through mentorship, philanthropy, and volunteerism.

The programme is also strategically aligned with DUT’s vision of fostering a dynamic, connected alumni network that continues to add value to the university’s mission.

The launch event on Thursday, 05 June 2025 will also include presentations from industry partners, and attendees will have the opportunity to engage with corporate representatives and explore potential collaborations. Industry stakeholders have been invited to participate and will showcase their branding at the venue, reinforcing their role in empowering the next generation of DUT graduates.
As part of the build-up to the launch, a call was sent out to DUT students to design a logo for the DUT RISE Programme, encouraging creativity and student participation in shaping the identity of this exciting initiative. The winner of the logo design competition will be officially announced at the launch event and the winning logo will be revealed.
As AARU continues to innovate in its approach to student development, the DUT RISE Programme stands as a testament to the university’s commitment to preparing students not just for a career, but for a future of impactful contribution and continuous growth.
