DUT ALUMNUS AND DUT SRC ENCOURAGE ENTREPRENUERSHIP

As youth unemployment trends continue to increase, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) Student Representative Council (SRC) together with DUT alumnus and entrepreneur Terry Mavundla have channelled their energies into creating awareness about entrepreneurship.

The DUT Midlands Campus SRC hosted a Business & Leadership Seminar at the Riverside Campus Hall on Saturday (29 July 2017). The seminar is the second of its kind after the DUT Durban branch SRC held one earlier this year (May 2017). These seminars form part of the various student-centered programmes that the SRC has planned for the 2016/17 term of the current executive.

Lutho Cele, General Secretary of the DUT SRC said they chose to focus on Business and Leadership because the two were essential for disciplined entrepreneurs. “We have seen how chronic the unemployment rate of this country is. We are an institution filled with young bright minds; we are told and taught to be innovative on a daily basis. For some it is simply a matter of lacking information, therefore it is essential as student leaders to be able to assist in providing guidance where necessary, and these seminars do just that,” he said.

Hosted by Vuma Fm’s Business Show host Patricia Malemia, the seminar had South Africa’s most dynamic, young and established entrepreneurs such as Dj Sbu Leope, InVogue Club Owner Bongani Mthethwa as well as Mavundla who founded Wisolve Pty (Ltd).”

Mavundla, who graduated from DUT in May 2017, said through their involvement in these seminars, Wisolve intended to show students that the solution to unemployment is not merely being employed by someone else.
“One of the biggest reasons we as Wisolve Pty (Ltd) get involved in these entrepreneurship campaigns is because we want our peers to see that it is possible to start a business from scratch and be a success. It is always better to change someone’s mindset if they can relate to you. We were also students not long ago; had we not changed our mindset and explored all the opportunities the University offered to us, we would have never created Wisolve or be this far,” explained Mavundla.

The seminar also consisted of presentations from the Kwa-Zulu Natal Department of Economic Development and Tourism, SEDA and Invotech.
