DUT ALUMNUS ASHISH MISRA MARKS FIRST YEAR IN HOLLYWOOD

It’s already been a year since DUT alumnus Ashish Misra, actor, model, entrepreneur, and systems analyst, embarked on his exhilarating journey to Hollywood, a dream he has long pursued. In October 2024, Misra moved to Los Angeles to study at the prestigious American Musical and Dramatic Arts Academy (AMDA) after receiving a full scholarship. His goal is to pursue acting full-time in Hollywood. Misra left South Africa on 14 October, taking a 29-hour flight to what is now his new home, the City of Angels.

Misra’s journey reflects his dual passions for technology and the arts. “Growing up, I was always an ‘A’ student in technology, which naturally led me to study at DUT. At the same time, I loved acting from the age of three, starting with school plays and progressing to local theatre and short films,” he shared.

After completing his software development studies at DUT in 2018, Misra joined FNB’s graduate programme in Johannesburg. He credits DUT for providing a structured environment where he gained technical expertise, practical skills, and valuable connections that have supported both his IT career and his creative pursuits.

Looking ahead, Misra is excited about his 2025 projects. He will star in the South African film Sugar Cane Boy, playing a lead role, and another film, The Cane Cutter, will debut in South African cinemas on 21 November 2025. Additionally, he has movies premiering on Netflix next year. “These projects reflect a lot of hard work and collaboration, and I’m thrilled to share these stories with audiences around the world. It’s a privilege to represent my roots while embracing the global stage,” he said.

Reflecting on his first year in Hollywood, Misra described it as a journey of growth and learning.

“A major highlight has been landing a lead role in a Hollywood feature film within my first year. It’s been surreal and deeply rewarding. I have also had the chance to network with amazing A-list actors and industry professionals, which has inspired me to keep pushing forward while carrying the South African flag high,” he said.

Misra has been honing his craft under top Hollywood acting coaches. “It’s been challenging but eye-opening. The discipline and technique required here have shaped me into a stronger, more versatile actor. Each class, project, and collaboration has taught me something new about the craft and myself,” he explained.

Despite his excitement, Misra admits he misses South Africa, especially his parents, sister, and his dogs. “Family means everything to me, and being away from them has been one of the hardest parts of this journey. I also miss my friends and my mum’s cooking, nothing in Hollywood compares. Still, I carry home with me in my work and in the way I represent South Africa,” he shared.

“To anyone chasing a dream, stay hungry, stay grounded, and don’t let fear hold you back. The life you want is on the other side of belief and bold moves,” Misra advised.
