The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Financial Aid unit, in collaboration with First National Bank (FNB), recently hosted a successful Financial Literacy workshop. Following the dynamic workshop, a certificate ceremony was held at Gym B, ML Sultan campus, to recognise students who had attended the four-day programme.
The completion certificate ceremony was attended by FNB facilitator Mr Senzo Myeni, the Financial Aid team, and students who had completed the workshop. Mr Myeni expressed his gratitude to DUT for the opportunity to conduct the workshop.
“We are in the business of changing lives, and that’s what I believe in when I am doing this,” said Mr Myeni.
The initiative was aimed to equip first-year students, mainly with essential personal finance skills, including budgeting, saving, investing, and managing debt. Financial literacy is a critical life skill that enables individuals to manage their finances effectively and work towards their financial goals.
The event featured student testimonials, poetry, and performances showcasing the impact of the workshop on participants. Student, Lungelo Buthelezi’s poetry exposed DUT’s hidden talent, while Mohau Kabini shared his experience, saying, “I learned a lot and I was happy to have been part of the programme.”
Mr Absolom Manashe, Manager of the Financial Aid unit at DUT, congratulated students who got their awards by saying that these awards demonstrated their commitment to excellence in financial literacy.
“We are proud of our students’ achievements and look forward to seeing them apply these skills in their academic and professional lives,” he added.
Mr Myeni from FNB expressed his gratitude to DUT for believing in FNB’s mission to teach students about finance.
“These students have demonstrated a commitment to financial literacy, and we are proud to recognise their achievements. We believe that financial education is key to changing lives, and we are honoured to be part of this journey,” reiterated Mr Myeni.
He further added that the partnership between DUT and FNB demonstrates a commitment to empowering students with financial literacy, setting them up for success in their academic and professional lives.
