DUT ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS RECOGNISED

DUT Architectural Technology students were honoured at the Alliance Française de Durban Student Award Ceremony on Friday last week (18 September 2015) for their hard work and dedication in a project seeking to get the public to rethink the value of high boundary walls.
Held at the organisation’s offices in Morningside, Durban, the award ceremony celebrated a group of Architectural Technology students who contributed and worked hard towards designing a new boundary structure for the organisation’s offices.

This initiative is part of the broader project: Imagine a City without Walls initiated and headed by the Urban Futures Centre, a research centre housed within DUT’s Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), eThekwini Municipality, Blue Security, eThekwini Municipality’s Safer Cities, dala artarchitecture for social change, Berea and Central SAPS, Durban Metro Police, construction companies and the French Embassy in South Africa are also involved in the project.

The construction of the project began in January 2015 and 50 DUT students participated. Alliance Francaise de Durban has been engaging on the redevelopment of its boundary wall in order to be more representative of its identity: creative, dynamic and open to all, as well as to build a model of iconic, socio-cultural architecture in the city of Durban.

“We had to come up with ideas like taking down the wall and a replacement. It’s humbling that I received a prize which shows that we are being acknowledged for our work,” said Nqobile Mthembu, DUT third-year Architectural Technology student.

Njabulo Mbuyazi, also a third year Architectural Technology students said this project shows that the University is moving in the right direction by getting students and itself involved with the community.
