DUT ASPIRING FILMMAKER CONTINUES TO SHINE WITH MULTIPLE AWARDS LOCALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY

Durban University of Technology (DUT) student Lindani Msibi is gaining international recognition after winning multiple awards for his work in film and theatre.

Msibi, who has previously been recognised for bringing powerful stories to life through film and theatre, was once again celebrated at a recent DUT awards ceremony where his name was called multiple times, a moment he describes as surreal and unforgettable. Among his most notable recognitions was the Excellence in Scriptwriting Award, an honour that acknowledged his dedication, discipline, and growing strength as a storyteller.

“I felt like I was on cloud nine. Being  acknowledged so many times was overwhelming in the best way possible. It reminded me that my hard work is paying off,” said Msibi.

One of the highlights of the ceremony was receiving a Best Student Film Award, an accolade he admitted he did not expect to win. “I was just happy to be nominated, so winning was a bonus,” he said.

Beyond DUT, Msibi’s work has resonated on global stages. His projects have earned him awards at international film festivals, including Best Short Film at a Canadian International Film Festival and Best Creative Idea Film in Taiwan. These international recognitions affirm the universal appeal of his storytelling and the ability of South African narratives to connect with audiences worldwide.

Central to many of these achievements was his film, My Winter Tears, a challenging yet rewarding project that significantly contributed to his recent success. “It pushed me creatively and emotionally but seeing how it has been received makes it all worthwhile,” he explained.

Msibi believes his growth as an artist is closely tied to the support and opportunities provided by DUT. He credits his lecturers, classmates, and the broader faculty for continuously pushing him to refine his craft. “The feedback, guidance, and encouragement I’ve received have shaped me into the artist I am today,” he said.

Representing DUT on both local and international platforms is something he does with pride. “It is a huge honour. I’m proud to showcase the talent that comes from this institution,” he added.

Despite the accolades, Msibi acknowledges that the journey has not been without challenges. Balancing academic responsibilities with creative projects required him to have strong time management skills and the willingness to ask for help when needed. These are lessons that have prepared him for the professional world.

Msibi plans to continue blending film and theatre, embracing the creative freedom both mediums offer. He will also be furthering his academic journey by pursuing an Honours degree this year.

To aspiring drama and film students, his message is simple but powerful: “Stay focused, work hard, and believe in yourself. It is a challenging journey, but it is incredibly rewarding.”
