DUT awarded rights to host the Green Campus Conference

 

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) has been awarded rights to host the

Annual Green Campus Conference for the next three years. The 2018 edition of the conference is scheduled to take place from Sunday, 01 to Wednesday, 04 July 2018 at Howard College Campus, University of KwaZulu-Natal.

According to DUT’s Senior Residential Affairs Officer, Phumlani Mnyango this conference which will be staged under the theme, Land and Marine Pollution will be attended by over 300 delegates. “It will be attended by students who are part of the Green Campus Initiative (GCI) from different universities and Housing staff members. DUT will be sending students who are part of GCI and Res-Life Staff members,” he said.

Mnyango also outlined the objectives of this conference, “The Annual Green Campus Conference is one of the programmes that the Association of Colleges and University Housing Officials International-South African Chapter (ACUHOI-SAC). This conference stands as a platform for all Institutions to share their work and achievements, but more especially a platform to exchange ideas of how to get our campuses, our communities and the whole world Greener.”

“Part of the Conference is set aside for experts who specialise in the theme of that particular conference to give talks and share their expertise with the delegates,” he added.

Some of the speakers who will address the conference include, Professor Poovendhree Reddy –  Environmental Health in the Department of Community Health Studies, Faculty of Health Sciences at the Durban University of Technology, Fiona Singh – Senior Education Officer from Durban Solid Waste, Vasha Chetty – Chief Marine Technician from KZN Wildlife and Nkosinathi Manqele – Lecturer from Maritime Studies at Durban University of Technology.

Delegates will also participate in coastal cleaning at Durban’s South Beach, and spend one day in an educational tour at UShaka Marine World.

The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the Conference consists of both DUT students and staff members who have been running the DUT Green Campus Initiative over the past six years.
