DUT BACHELOR OF EDUCATION SECOND YEAR STUDENTS CELEBRATE ZULU TRADITIONAL WEDDING KNOWN AS UMGCAGCO

It was a day filled with so much excitement at Durban University of Technology (DUT) Indumiso Sport Centre where the DUT Bachelor of Education second year students who are registered for Communication in IsiZulu 102 were showcasing their theory projects that are covered under the module about Zulu Cultures through celebrating a Zulu traditional wedding known as Umgcagco.

The celebration kick started with different traditional songs sung by students around the campus as a sign that there was a celebration to take place, and then they all proceeded to the venue.

The event was attended by DUT staff members and students and the programme was facilitated by Bachelor of Education second year student, Mr Nhlanhla Magwaza who thanked everyone that managed to attend and support the students.

“It is such a beautiful day to be gathered here in celebration of our bride, Asanda Zuma and groom Nhlakanipho Mhlongo. I will be using the programme shared with everyone as the guidance for the event. We have a lot of activities packed for the event which includes the history of the Zulu wedding, clan names of the late King Goodwill Zwelithini, poetry, performance of different traditional songs and many more,” said Magwaza.

The DUT Department of School of Education Head of Department (HOD): Dr Mthiyane, opened and welcomed everyone who attended the event.

“The Zulu culture is very interesting and diverse; we look forward to learning more today. It makes me happy to see how much dedication and effort the learners have put in order to make this event a success and I am looking forward to the rest of the event”, she said.

The students further showcased all the different stages that form part of the Zulu wedding where both the groom and bride’s family members sang and dance to different songs, both partners accepting that they want to marry each other and the elders gave advice to the couple and many more.

DUT School of Education Lecturer: Dr. Gladstone Zulu when sharing his words of gratitude mentioned that the students have shown so much commitment.

“I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to all the students who managed to put together in organising and planning for this event which turned to be a great success. What makes this more interesting is that the students planned all this on their own with their own finances. A lot of passion and love for the Zulu Cultures was demonstrated during this event,” explained Dr Zulu.

The event concluded with a performance from the famous masikandi musician, Umjabulisi.
