DUT CELEBRATES AND EMPOWERS WOMEN

In commemoration of Women’s Day, the Durban University of Technology (DUT) recently hosted a Women’s Day celebration at Lake Eland, bringing together more than 100 women from the University’s Durban and Midlands campuses.

The event was led by Human Capital Services in collaboration with the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: People and Operations (P&O).

Master of Ceremonies, Miss Zamazulu Nyawose, ensured the event got off to a vibrant start as attendees arrived dressed in safari-themed outfits. She welcomed the guests and thanked them for honouring the invitation and embracing the theme.

The event was attended by Dr Nonhlanhla Mthiyane, Campus Director: Midlands, who delivered the opening remarks. Dr Mthiyane thanked Human Capital Services for sponsoring the event and contributing to its success. She also expressed her appreciation to Dr Matheakuena Mohale and Mr Victor Mothobi for their support.

In her address, Dr Mthiyane highlighted the important roles women play in society, their families and the workplace. She encouraged women to celebrate themselves more often and recognise the meaningful contributions they make every day.

She also conveyed a message of support from the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor: People and Operations, Dr Matheakuena Mohale.

Speaking on behalf of Dr Mohale, Dr Mthiyane said: “I urge the more experienced women to take the younger women by the hand, teach them the DUT processes and systems, and mentor them so that they are also as equipped as they are. I encourage women of DUT to start working together and avoid working against one another.”

The celebration provided attendees with an opportunity to relax, connect and participate in a range of activities, including a game drive, spa treatments, suspension bridge crossing and ziplining.

Miss Khethiwe Mzimela, one of the attendees, described the experience as a welcome break from the usual work environment.

“Honestly, the safari experience was 10 out of 10! It was such a refreshing break from the usual work environment and the perfect opportunity to relax, have fun and meet amazing women from different departments,” she said.

The game drive was among the highlights of the day for Mzimela, who enjoyed being outdoors and experiencing the natural surroundings.

While she had initially considered taking part in the zipline, Mzimela opted for a massage instead.

“As much as I wanted to be adventurous, I had to be honest with myself; I am terrified of ziplining! So, I chose the massage instead and honestly, I think I made the best decision. The massage was absolutely amazing and probably one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I left feeling completely relaxed and refreshed,” she said.

Mzimela also appreciated the opportunity to connect with women from different departments, sharing laughs and stories and forming new friendships.

In closing, Miss Lalitha Chetty, Director: Legal Services, expressed her appreciation to the event organisers, Human Capital Services and the Office of the DVC: P&O for recognising and celebrating the women of DUT.
