DUT CELEBRATES STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS AT SERVICES AWARDS

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) hosted its Student Services Awards at the Greyville Convention Centre, on Friday, 04 October 2024, celebrating the exceptional talents and significant contributions of students in advancing the goals of ENVISION 2030. The event recognised those who have made a meaningful impact within the university community.

Dr Clement Moreku, Dean of Students, welcomed attendees and emphasised the event’s purpose to honour student’s dedication. “We are here to celebrate the exceptional contributions of our students, both individually and as teams,” he stated. He noted that the Student Services Awards reflect the quality, commitment, creativity, and enthusiasm of DUT students.

Professor Fulufhelo Nemavhola, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research Innovation and Engagement, congratulated all award recipients and encouraged students to embrace leadership both academically and beyond. “Leadership extends beyond the university, it’s something you carry throughout your life, applying the knowledge you gain here,” he said.

Dr Shoba Rathilal, who is the acting Director of the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT)  shared insights on student successes, expressing concern for the students’ ability to apply their learning into the real world. “Receiving an award highlights that success is not just about high marks; it’s a testament to your dedication and excellence,” she explained.

Keshan Govender, Senior Financial Aid Counsellor, noted that the award selections adhered to the values and principles of ENVISION2030 to ensure fairness and integrity in the process.

Throughout the 2030 academic year, students demonstrated exceptional dedication and professionalism across various programmes within student services. The event honoured remarkable individuals and groups for their significant contributions.

Riashnie Thaver, a student who received awards for the promotion of healthy lifestyles and the Dean of Students Prestigious Award, expressed her gratitude: “I am incredibly humbled and excited to be recognised for my work. It feels great to add value to student life, and I look forward to passing my knowledge to the next generation,” she said.

Luyanda Majozi, a third-year Clothing Management student, won first place in the Student Entrepreneurship award. He described the recognition as impactful for a young entrepreneur, expressing his gratitude to DUT and stating that the award motivates him to continue his efforts.

The Outstanding Residence Life Award was presented to Bayaphambili Residence, led by Residential Advisor Musa Mbonambi. She expressed her passion for student services: “I am truly grateful for the recognition of our work in ensuring our students are well supported. This award means a lot to them. I appreciate the recognition from DUT,” explained Mbonambi.

Dr Maditsane  Nkonoane, Registrar at DUT, concluded the event by thanking all attendees for their support and congratulating the award recipients for their outstanding achievements.
