DUT CHOIR SHOWCASES VOCAL TALENT OF THE CHORISTERS AT THE INAUGURAL ANNUAL MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZA

The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) award-winning choir took centre stage at Mansfield Hall, DUT’s Ritson Campus on 7 October 2023, hosting their debut annual musical extravaganza concert.

The musical event was aimed to bolster the choir’s presence, invite DUT students to join its ranks in 2024, and to foster a culture of music and values through art among students.

The event also served as a platform for celebrating diverse, musical genres and the intrinsic value of music in one’s lives. It was designed to raise awareness of the significance of upholding values, all while planning to make the concert an annual fixture, alternating between the Durban and Midlands campuses. The event’s scope expanded to encompass other art forms, including music, poetry, dance, and drama performances.

Bonginkosi Cingani, the choir’s conductor, envisions the choir as a marketing tool and brand ambassador for the university, striving to earn respect from other departments and be recognised as a professional entity. He emphasised that the choir’s role extends beyond mere entertainment and called for increased university investment to ensure its professional growth.

Zithobile Sewula, the choir’s project manager, expressed his gratitude for the choir’s presence, underlining their eagerness to effect positive changes in future events.

Lindani Cebekhulu, the choir’s chairperson, emphasised the dedication and vocal talent of the choristers. He revealed the choir’s vision to play a substantial role in the university community, enriching students’ musical talent and demonstrating skills such as vocal production, voice care, music learning, and multi-part singing across various genres and styles.

The inaugural annual musical extravaganza concert was a resounding success, showcasing the DUT choir’s dedication to nurturing talent, instilling values, and promoting music’s enduring importance. With their sights set on a harmonious future, the choir looks forward to even more melodious performances and an enhanced impact on the university’s musical landscape.
