DUT Comedian aims for the Stars

DUT Comedian aims for the Stars

Durban University of Technology’s funniest student, Thabiso Msomi famously known as Moemish, wants to be known as an artist that produces authentic content.

The Information Technology (IT) final year student who hails from Mpumalanga township in Hammersdale has his work cut out for him while he aims high for the sky in the comedy and entertainment industry. The 23-year-old comedian who only discovered that he was a comedian in 2014, used to think people were entertained by his witty, good-spirited personality until someone told him about becoming a comedian.

“In 2014, when I first joined DUT, I realised that I had talent to become a comedian, when my peers told me I can make money out of the jokes I shared with them. I tried out what they had suggested and it worked magic for me. From there on I met other comedians such as former DUT student, Simphiwe Shembe, who allowed me to perform in his comedy shows,” said Msomi.

For the past three years, Msomi has been featured in many of Shembe’s comedy shows at the Bat Centre. Msomi has also enjoyed the support, love and guidance he received from other comedians and the DUT community.
“My fellow peers have always watched my shows where ever I perform, my biggest fan base has been DUT students,” added Msomi.

Msomi’s talent has seen him share a stage with other artists but his highlight to date is being chosen as the SA Idols “Wooden Mic” finalist. Whilst, he is in the running to be the 2017 Wooden Mic winner, he has lined up performances in Cape Town, comedy shows with 1KZNTV called Usinekani and another comedy show at DUT on 7 September 2017, at the Cane growers hall.

“I would like to win wooden mic, the easiest way people can vote for me is to go on Mzansi magic website or on my Facebook timeline (Moemish comedian) and Instagram page,” he said.
Currently, Msomi is on the verge of launching his direction in comedy. He is doing more shows which will include inspirational writing through comedy. He also hopes to make a success of his IT career while blossoming in the comedy industry as well.
