The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most cherished celebrations in Chinese culture. It is widely regarded as a time for family reunion, thanksgiving and contemplation, during an important time of the year in the Chinese calendar. It symbolises harmony, completeness and the shared joy of the autumn harvest in China. This timeless tradition, centred around the iconic mooncake, transcends borders, carrying a universal message of unity and peace.
In the spirit of this celebration, the Confucius Institute at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) and the South African KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Fujian Overseas Chinese Association are proud to co-host this annual cultural gala. The mission of the event is to build bridges of understanding and friendship between the people of South Africa and China.
Co-Dean of the DUT Confucius Institute, Mr Frank WU Lin, said: “This year, we are honoured to present a breathtaking performance called The Elegant Rhythm of Dance, brought directly to Durban by world-renowned artists from the prestigious Beijing Dance Academy. This special showcase is more than a performance; it is a narrative told through the exquisite language of movement, featuring classical and contemporary Chinese dance that embodies centuries of artistic refinement.”
He added: “The gala represents a beautiful confluence of tradition and artistry, celebrating the ties that bind our communities. It is a heartfelt gesture of gratitude to our friends and partners in South Africa and a promise of continued cultural exchange and shared prosperity.”
The event is at Suncoast in Durban, on Saturday, 04 October 2025 and tickets are available for R150 from Ticketpro or the Suncoast Ticket Office. All proceeds from ticket sales will support the Beijing Dance Academy.
