ABOUT DUT DATA DAY

This year, our third Institutional Research (IR) Conference (the second with Siyaphumelela as partner) has been reimagined as DUT Data Day (D3). We have retained the ethos of Institutional Research which is applied research about an institution, for that institution – in our case, DUT. The difference this year is that there is no fixed conference theme, no conventional conference format and no paper presentations.

#D3ThinkOutsideTheBox

DUT Data Day is about Knowing, Doing and Impacting. The D3 event will cover two exciting days of sharing data skills and showcasing data informed projects and activities that have been implemented or are currently in progress across the University. How are we using data at DUT for decision-making, planning and improving? Day 1 will focus on training and upskilling (Knowing). Day 2 will focus on showcasing data work (Doing and Impacting). We encourage student participation and attendance.

#D3KnowingDoingImpacting

We invite you to consider the various ways in which data has been/is being used to inform and improve planning, processes and policies in your department, division or faculty. We invite you to consider the innovative ways in which you use and present data in your department, division or faculty. How is DUT using data about the University and for the University to drive organisational effectiveness, and ultimately student success? Come and share your insights, your knowledge and your practice with the wider DUT community.

PROGRAMME

Day 1 (28th August): WORKSHOPS
WORKSHOP 1: DUT Beginning University Survey of Student Engagement (BUSSE): Who are our first year students? What do they expect? How can we best support them?Venue: S2 Level 4 Room 402

Time: 10:30 – 14:30

Note: Limited to 40 participants

In South Africa, the highest dropouts occur at first-year level. This workshop will analyse first-year student feedback on the 2019 Beginning University Survey of Student Engagement (BUSSE). From the data we will have discussions about the implications this knowledge has on how we develop and adjust our orientation and transitional programmes, how the data can influence marketing strategies and behaviours, and how we can best support our first year students in general. Outcomes

Participants will analyse BUSSE data with a view to:

– identifying students’ expectations regarding the first year of study;

– determining students’ views about “what it takes” to succeed;

– understanding beginning students’ concerns regarding university life;

– informing appropriate interventions to promote student success.

WORKSHOP 2:Statistical data analysis of class marks using Excel and SPSSVenue: S6 Level 0, Room BS6204

Note: Limited to 30 participants (DUT staff only)

No previous Statistics, Excel or SPSS knowledge is required.

Have you ever noticed differences in performances amongst your students, perhaps gender differences or across class groups or qualifications? Would you like to know if these differences are due to chance or coincidence or whether they are important enough to warrant closer attention and intervention? Then this workshop is for you. We will cover some basic statistical methods which can be used to analyse class marks using Excel and SPSS. These include mean, standard deviation, correlation etc. Basic statistical significance tests will be explained and applied to data. Outcomes

Participants will be able to:
