DUT DEAN’S MERIT GRADUATE TANDO NWALATA ASPIRES TO CONTRIBUTE TOWARD SOLVING BUSINESS CHALLENGES

For 23-year-old Tando Celestone Nwalata, success has been built on commitment, resilience, and determination. Originally from Glenwood in Durban, with family roots in Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape, the young graduate has already begun building an impressive future both academically and professionally.

Tando recently graduated Cum Laude and received the prestigious Dean’s Merit Award during the Faculty of Accounting and Informatics graduation season at the Durban University of Technology (DUT).

Currently employed at the South African Revenue Service (SARS) as a Graduate Trainee at Lehae La SARS Head Office in Pretoria, he is already applying the skills and knowledge gained during his studies in a professional environment.

He completed a Diploma in Information and Communication Technology in Business Analysis, a programme that immediately stood out to him because of its combination of business and technology. His passion for problem-solving and innovation motivated him to pursue the qualification and remain committed throughout his academic journey.

Reflecting on his experience at DUT, Nwalata described the journey as life-changing.

“It was really an incredible journey. DUT invested in both my personal and academic growth. It taught me resilience regardless of the challenges and helped me balance academic pressure with reality,” he said.

Despite facing challenges while balancing academics with external pressures, he remained focused on achieving his goals. His commitment to excellence eventually earned him recognition as one of the faculty’s top-performing students.

Receiving the Dean’s Merit Award was particularly meaningful because he always wanted to become a positive example to his siblings and family. He credits much of his growth to the support of his lecturers, who mentored and encouraged him throughout his studies.

Looking ahead, he hopes to further his studies and pursue a career in Business Intelligence, where he can contribute toward solving complex IT and business challenges. He also hopes his story will inspire students who may feel discouraged during their own journeys.

“Be willing to learn, make connections, do not be afraid of your lecturers. They are the epitome of knowledge. They will guide you throughout your academic journey and make you stronger warriors when you go out into the wilderness. I just want to say that this achievement is not mine alone,” said Tando.
