The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Department of Applied Management in Midlands recently hosted Student Awards Ceremony at the Golden Horse Casino in Pietermaritzburg.
The opening proceedings, including welcoming remarks and outlining the day’s purpose, were conducted by the Head of Department: Professor Bongani Dlamini. Prof Dlamini graciously acknowledged the special guest that included the Deputy Executive Dean: Faculty of Management Sciences, Dr. Melanie Lourens, Midlands Campus Director, Dr. Joe Molete, Guest Speakers: CEO Mr. Xolani Mawande, DUT Alumni: Mr. Simphiwe Mnomiya and extended to all the attendees, including DUT staff members and students.
Prof. Dlamini emphasized the significance of the event, describing it as a momentous occasion to celebrate and acknowledge the accomplishments of students in Applied Management.
“The ceremony was aimed to recognise not only academic achievements but also entrepreneurial skills. It was with pride that we share the success stories of our students, who have displayed exemplary dedication, innovation, and determination in these areas of study. The ceremony promises was a grand affair, with a diverse range of students receiving well-deserved awards and recognition for their hard work in the field of Human Resources Management, Business Administration and Public Relations and Entrepreneurship we had speeches from distinguished guest speaker’s CEO: Mr Mawande and DUT Alumni: Mr Mnomiya,” he said.
Dr. Melanie Lourens conveyed a message of support. She expressed delight in celebrating the exceptional achievements of faculty and students, urging attendees to cherish the dedication and hard work that led to this moment. Dr. Lourens commended the outstanding awardees, acknowledging their vital role in elevating academic standards and fostering a spirit of unity and shared success within the institution. She extended congratulations to all awardees and gratitude to the entire DUT community for their unwavering dedication.
CEO Mr. Xolani Mawande from the South African Board for People Practices (SABPP) shared words of wisdom with the attendees. He encouraged them to embrace curiosity, adaptability, and resilience in the face of challenges. Mr. Mawande stressed the importance of building strong relationships, collaborative innovation, and the pursuit of excellence as a continuous journey.
“The skills you cultivate today will shape the leader you become tomorrow. Stop feeling sorry for yourself, as the world does not owe you anything. Stop selling yourself short, and avoid living someone else’s life. I’ve been looked down on so many times, but I know my worth and where I’m going. Step up, focus on your own path, and don’t discount your worth,” he added.
The event continued with lively activities, Including entertaining by Animation by Red Eye and Group Number as well as a musical item by the choir.
To conclude the successful ceremony, Dr. Joe Molete delivered final remarks and a vote of thanks. He expressed gratitude to leadership, specifically acknowledging Dr. Lourens for leading the faculty and Prof. Dlamini for heading the department. Dr. Molete thanked all staff members for their hard work, emphasizing the critical role of leadership during the implementation of ENVISIO2030. He extended thanks to distinguished speakers and everyone involved in making the event a success, concluding with heartfelt congratulations to all winners for their fantastic work.
