DUT DONATES 230 BEDS TO SUKUMA COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL IN IMBALI

The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Student Housing Midlands recently donated 230 beds to the Sukuma Comprehensive School in Imbali, Pietermaritzburg.

This initiative was aimed at showing the Imbali community that DUT is not only about ensuring that students attain their qualifications through academic excellence, but to also convey a message to the township that DUT cares.

Midlands Campuses Director, Dr Joe Molete said everyone had a duty to make a small contribution to change the lives of children and ease the burden carried by their parents.

“As a university we wish to engage more with our neighbourhood community, since we have a common goal of teaching our students. We aim to work together in many projects that are in the pipelines. The university will commence with a project called the Imbali Education Precinct which will comprise of repositioning of the school of Education, Enterprise Development in the community, Agricultural hub, Eco-tourism, Engineering hub, Indigenous Knowledge System and Wellness Centre, Sports Academy, ICT and the Public Relations and Communications hub,” said Dr Molete.

Ntsikelelo Nhlenyama, Res Life Officer-Midlands Campuses said: “We saw that the Sukuma Comprehensive School has a hostel for learners, that alone made us sensitive to the fact that they are using beds that are in a worse-off condition than the ones that we are disposing of. Rather than taking these beds and dumping them, the school representatives found that our beds were in a better condition than expected.”

Explaining more on the donation, Sandile Nene, Indumiso Residence Insource Coordinator said: “This initiative is a drawback from the vision that stems from the years of Professor Ahmed Bawa that members of the community that are surrounding the institutions of higher learning should also benefit, not only through having the institution rendering its academic services to the community, but also gauge if there is something that the University may no longer need, and see how can that asset assist the community and the surroundings.”

Sibusiso Collins Radebe, Principal of the Sukuma Comprehensive School, expressed his gratitude to the DUT team for their generous contribution.

“In an African setting a neighbour is more than a family member and we are witnessing that,” he said.

He (Radebe) further said that the school was privileged and honoured to be the recipients of 230 beds. He thanked DUT Indumiso Campus and Student Housing and Res Life, indicating that DUT could have chosen any other school to assist but chose his, and that they considered themselves lucky to be have been considered for the donation.

“This gesture should be a lesson to all of us. Lastly, I would like to thank Ntsikelelo Nhlenyama (Residence Life Officer Midlands), Sandile Nene (Residence Insource Coordinator), as well as Celiwe Chemane (Manager -Student Housing Midlands), who initiated the programme, may our relationship grow,” he said.
