Mzamo Msani, a dedicated driver at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), has proven that it is never too late to chase a dream. Nearly three decades after completing matric, he proudly graduated with his first qualification, a Diploma in Operations Management at the DUT 2026 Autumn Graduation ceremony, held at the Olive Convention Centre on Tuesday, 26 May 2026.
Mzamo, 47, from Mthwalume on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal, joined DUT as a temporary driver in 2019 and secured a permanent position a year later. The opportunity inspired him to pursue further education and finally accomplish a goal he had carried for years.
It has always been his dream to earn a university qualification but after matric he had to work to support his family. He spent many years in the security industry, eventually becoming a security manager, before joining DUT. The skills he developed in his career sparked an interest in studying Operations Management.
Balancing full-time work with academic responsibilities was a challenge. Early mornings, long hours on the road, and demanding coursework required discipline, sacrifice, and unwavering focus. Mzamo studied part-time in the evenings, sometimes missing classes due to work, but he remained determined not to give up.
He says that seeing students graduate and achieve their dreams motivated him to persevere. He adjusted his schedule, sacrificed sleep and social time, and developed coping mechanisms to keep moving forward. His story highlights the power of resilience and the message that education has no age limit.
Mzamo’s accomplishment is both a personal milestone and an inspiring example to colleagues, students, and the wider university community. He is currently pursuing his Advanced Diploma in Operations Management at DUT and plans to continue to a postgraduate diploma and master’s degree in the future.
As he celebrates this achievement, Mzamo hopes his journey will encourage others who may feel discouraged by time or circumstances. He thanked his family, especially his children, for their support, and acknowledged the encouragement he received from his manager and colleagues.
“Don’t give up on your dreams. No matter how long it takes, keep going,” advised Mzamo.
