DUT ENTREPRENEUR SHINES ON AFRICAN STAGE

Durban University of Technology (DUT) master’s student, Zakhe Khuzwayo, has earned continental acclaim after being named first runner-up in the ‘Social Founder of the Year, under 30 category, at the prestigious 2025 Founder of the Year (FOYA) Awards. Recognised as one of Africa’s most promising young entrepreneurs, Khuzwayo proudly represented both DUT and South Africa, standing out for his commitment to social impact and innovation.

Khuzwayo is the President of The Men Carve, an NGO that empowers men to challenge harmful norms and foster a safer and more inclusive society. As it was his first time participating in the competition, he also became the first DUT alumni to achieve this success amongst African countries which is an impressive achievement highlighting his growth. Khuzwayo was not alone in making waves, Kwanele Ortega Msomi, a DUT Alumnus and founder of Ubuntu Aid Foundation NPO, was the second runner-up. They competed against other young entrepreneurs from various regions in Africa including are Zambia, Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique.

FOYA was launched in November 2016 in Nairobi, Kenya. The event is hosted annually to celebrate and recognise outstanding young entrepreneurs in Africa, acknowledging their contributions to nation-building and job creation, while inspiring others to pursue entrepreneurship.

Sharing his excitement on his achievement, Khuzwayo said: “ I felt incredibly grateful and proud of The Men Carve and the impactful work we continue to do. Becoming the first runner-up in the FOYA Awards 2025 under the Social Founder of the Year, under 30 category was truly a dream come true especially being recognised on an international stage. I believe this recognition extends beyond myself, as it’s a testament to the dedication and hard work of my incredible team. Their unwavering belief in my vision has been instrumental in our collective success. As young leaders, we must seize the moment and demonstrate our capacity to lead with purpose and passion. Our time is now, and we are committed to making a meaningful impact,” he said.

Khuzwayo aspires to implement initiatives in the DUT community to expand leadership programmes, to promote health manhood, preventing violence and drive community engagement. He wants to empower students through mentorship and workshops on entrepreneurship and social innovation, and foster partnerships with local organisations to create sustainable impact.

He extended a special thanks to the DUT community for their votes and support. He also thanked The Men Carve Organisation and the wider community for being part of his journey. Most importantly, he thanked God for the opportunity and the strength to persevere.
