#DUT Experience 2023

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Thandwa Mthembu officially welcomed the first-year students, together with their parents, guardians and sponsors. The welcome ceremony for students in Durban was held at the Curries Fountain Stadium on Monday, 13 February 2023 and he welcomed the first-year students in the Midlands at the Indumiso Campus Sports Centre in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday, 14 February 2023.

DUT’s Communications teams’ Nomvelo Zulu spoke to the first-year students about their views and experience at the DUT 2023 First Year Orientation.

Tharollo Koali, first-year ICT: Business Analysis student.

“The Orientation programme introduced me to the academics, social and cultural environment of DUT. It helped me to meet my fellow classmates; find my way around campus and also introduced me to various services and departments that are available on campus which are important to us as students.”

Lungisani Khanyisani Pakkies, first-year Mechanical Engineering student.

“The DUT First Year Orientation provided and exposed us to tools and essential information that we (students) need in order to be ready to become successful students. I believe that attending this Orientation programme will help me graduate on time because I know and understand almost all the corners of the university now. The orientation also had lots of entertainment and we enjoyed each and every moment.”

Simphiwe Ndlovu, first-year Bachelor of Built in Architecture student.

“The DUT 2023 First Year Orientation was very helpful as I got to know about everything that is found around campus. I learnt a lot about university life even though the classes have not commenced yet. I know where to get help when I am faced with difficulties during my course of study. I now know who to contact if I want any career guidance, healthcare services, student counselling and health. I am looking forward to the commencement of classes and having conversations and creating relationships with my university mates.”

Letlotlo Mokena, first-year Bachelor of Construction Studies student.

“I am grateful that I attended the DUT 2023 First Year Orientation because I got a full overview of what to expect as a DUT student. I got a chance to meet the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of DUT, the Student Representative Council (SRC) members, and other important pillars that the university have.”
