Originally from Hammarsdale, Georgedale, Sekwanele Mtolo’s journey at Durban University of Technology (DUT) has been both unexpected and life changing.
He recently graduated with his Advanced Diploma in Marketing at DUT Autumn Graduation Ceremony held at the Olive Convention Centre (OCC) in Durban.
“I am very grateful and proud of myself looking back where it all started it was never easy. I am proud of myself for what I have achieved,” he said.
At the time of applying to university, DUT Football team goalkeeper knew very little about higher education. In fact, it was his sister who completed the application on his behalf. What began as an unfamiliar path soon became a journey of self-discovery and personal growth.
Sekwanele’s role model is Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine, whose dedication and success continue to inspire him.
His passion for football started at around the age of 10, inspired by a talented goalkeeper from his hometown, Mfundo “Suluman”.
“I used to skip classes just to watch him play because I admired his skill so much, and even today, he continues to inspire me,” he said.
His football journey has been filled with memorable achievements. In 2024, he helped his team win the title and returned to the finals the following year, where he was named Player of the Year one of the biggest highlights of his sporting career.
Being selected for both the DUT Varsity Football Team and the USSA Football Tournament Team for two consecutive years has motivated him to continue striving for excellence.
Sekwanele dreams of playing in the professional football league one day and proudly representing his hometown on a bigger stage.
The DUT Living Values and Principles that resonate most with him are excellence and transparency. Throughout his journey, he has consistently pushed himself to improve, maintained a positive outlook during difficult times, and remained true to himself.
Among the challenges he has faced were balancing academic responsibilities with football commitments and recovering from an injury earlier this year.
“That period tested me mentally and physically, but it also taught me resilience, patience and the importance of never giving up,” he said.
His family has been his greatest source of strength. They have supported him every step of the way, from attending his Residence League finals and varsity football matches to standing by him during his recovery from injury.
Although his current field of study was not his original choice, he remains grateful for the opportunity. The experience has opened doors for him and played a significant role in shaping the person he is today.
Looking ahead, Sekwanele aims to build a successful career and eventually establish his own businesses. He is also passionate about giving back to the community by helping young boys who dream of pursuing football.
“I want to guide them and create opportunities that many of us did not have,” he said.
His story is a reminder that life does not always unfold according to plan. Sometimes the most meaningful opportunities come from unexpected beginnings. What matters most is how one responds to the journey and the challenges along the way.
