DUT Flies KZN Flag High at GCI Awards

DUT scooped eight awards at the 4th Annual Green Campuses Conference which was held at the University of the Western Cape.

The event started on Sunday, 28 June 2015, and ended on Thursday, 2 July 2015.

DUT was the only University representing KwaZulu-Natal. Universities from neighbouring countries such as Botswana also participated in the conference and competition.

The following awards were won by DUT:

– Green Student of the Year (won by Siyanda Dube, DUT GCI Chairman).

– Green Staff Member of the Year.

– Overall Presentation on the EcoRunway.

– Best Recyclable Material on the EcoRunway.

– Best Design on the EcoRunway.

– Best Look on the EcoRunway.

– Innovative Green Campus Activities and Programmes.

Siyanda Dube, who is the Chairman of DUT’s Green Campus Initiative (GCI), said, “We managed to scoop more than six awards, so surely that means that there has been a positive change. Taking a look at last year, we only came with the idea of installing solar chargers that came about from the engagement we had with other institutions. We have been doing our best and it will not stop here. We are continuing. This is just the beginning”, he said, adding that DUT’s Department of Student Housing is extremely supportive towards their (GCI) campaigns. “We (GCI) will still need the involvement of faculties and their respective deans because we are still in the process of recruiting more students for the initiative”, he said.

The Green Campus Initiative (GCI) was started in 2007 by a handful of students and staff to address issues of sustainability within campuses.
