DUT Forms Software Response Team (SRT)

DUT Forms Software Response Team (SRT)

At the Durban University of Technology, we believe that technology has the power to tackle some of the world’s greatest challenges.

Over the last couple of years, the world has witnessed breakthrough technological advances such as agricultural drone technology, smart contact lenses currently being developed to monitor blood sugar levels as well as technology enabling academic learning to take place away from the confines of a classroom.

It is in this light that DUT invites you to a media briefing where plans to form a Software Response Team (SRT) will be unveiled. The Software Response Team will look at ways to improve the everyday lives of people.

The media briefing will coincide with the launch of the Invotech Creative Digital Hub. The Hub, to be housed within DUT’s The Invotech Technology Business Incubator, a business incubator at the University, seeks to successfully position KwaZulu-Natal as the Silicon kingdom of Africa and a world leading creative hub.

Speaking about the Software Response Team, Cassim Vanker, Information Technology Lecturer who will be part of the team, said, “As software developers, the formation of the team is about how we can improve the lives of citizens. Delivering services should not solely lie in the hands of government. We are looking at attacking diverse societal problems,” he said.

Last year, the SRT developed a Certificate Verification System which enables DUT’s academic certificates to be verified in less than two seconds by simply placing a cellphone with the necessary free software over a certificate issued by the University.

The SRT media briefing will take place as follows:

Date: Tuesday, 24 February 2015

Time: 13h00

Venue: 123 Botanic Gardens Road, Berea, Durban

The Invotech Creative Digital Hub launch will take place as follows:

Time: 14h00

The DUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Ahmed Bawa, will be at the media briefing.

Please note that questions and requests for comment on the Software Response Team will be answered during and after the media briefing.
